Q & A

When did you first learn to sew?

I first started to learn to sew when I was just a little girl. My mum started to teach me how to hand sew when I was about 5 years old. I can’t remember exactly when she taught me how to use a sewing machine, but I would have been a bit older. I started off making little things like hankies with embroidered motifs and lace edges and clothes for my dolls. When I progressed to using the sewing machine, Mum started to teach me to make very simple clothes for myself using commercial patterns.

Did you have any formal sewing/design/fashion training?

Yep. After finishing high school I did an Advanced Diploma of Fashion Design Technology. I really enjoyed this course and I feel blessed to have been able to study something I love. The course covered so many different areas of fashion including fashion history, design, pattern making, sewing, grading, marketing among other things. It was a fun and very thorough course. (And no, the group that ran the course didn’t pay me to say that. I just honestly loved it!)

Where did you study?

I completed the Advanced Diploma at TAFE in Adelaide. I think TAFE is an Australian thing, so for those of you who aren’t familiar with it, TAFE stands for Technical and Further Education. It’s kind of like a college. Kind of. TAFE institutes run courses that are usually very hands on and practical in a variety of different trades.
