Hand Worked Buttonholes

Image via

Have you ever sewn hand worked buttonholes before? It’s something that I’m really keen to try and yesterday I stumbled across this great tutorial at BurdaStyle that shows how to sew them. My sewing machine sews reasonable buttonholes, but I think that some garments call for something a little bit more special. I have sewn bound buttonholes before and was pleased with the result but I really want to learn how to do these too. I think this technique would also be great for repairing old buttonholes. I’ve got a jacket with buttonholes that have frayed a little and are starting to look a bit tatty. Seems like a perfect opportunity to give hand worked buttonholes a try! Have you ever used this technique before? If you have and you’ve got any hints or tips you’d like to share, please let me know in the comments!

Dear Angela, I have only made hand worked buttonholes (with different degrees of success). I never dared trying with my sewing machine, but I should, and I will one day that I am not feeling too overwhelmed by the mere idea. But first I will have to retrace the instructions book of the machine….
